First impression is the atmosphere, and it's a typical Mexican restaurant with the awkward color palette and Latin music. I personally don't know anyone that likes this but having traveled a lot in Latin America, it's "authentic" for whatever that's worth. I was very pleased with our service. Our waitress didn't have a fantastic command of the English language so I guess you could say that too was also "authentic" but she was very attentive but not distracting or interruptive which is rare for a server to get that balance right. The food, which is the most important thing, was the best Mexican food I've ever had!!!!!! In general, I prefer Peruvian food and I have a favorite Peruvian restaurant in Lima, another favorite in New Jersey, and a third in Amsterdam and this little restaurant in my Park Hill neighborhood is my new favorite for Latin food.

We enjoyed our lunch at Mariscos Tierra Caliente — shrimp tacos for me, a shrimp quesadilla for my dining companion. The shrimp tacos came to the table looking so attractive with shredded purple cabbage and carrot, as well as chopped tomatoes and cucumber. The server couldn't have been nicer, too, and I like the cheerful mix of colors in the restaurant. We found the joss sticks burning in the entrance of the restaurant as we ate, evidently to mask an unpleasant smell, a bit strange and off-putting. The heavy scent of the smoking sticks fought with the taste of the tacos and quesadilla. It's nice to have a Mexican place that features seafood — shrimp, oysters, scallops, octopus, fish — in our vicinity.
